Card Number Zero-Padding Guide: Generate Fixed-Width Serial Numbers

2026-09-20 · Card Tools

One detail that is easy to miss when numbering cards is inconsistent width: the 1st card is 1, the 10th is 10, and lined up they look ragged. Sorting them as text in Excel also goes wrong (1, 10, 100, 2…). The Serial Number Tool appends a continuous number to the end of every line and pads it with zeros to a fixed width, so you end up with tidy numbers like 001, 002, 003.

1. Why zero-pad?

2. How to use it

  1. Set the Starting Number; the first line starts numbering from this value;
  2. Enter the padding width in the Fixed Width field. For example, 3 means 001, 002, 003; enter 0 to disable padding;
  3. Paste your card content into the Original Text box, one item per line;
  4. Click Append Serial Number and the number is appended to the end of each line.

3. Example

Three original lines, starting number 5, fixed width 3:

CARD1005 CARD2006 CARD3007

(the first line gets 005, the second 006, the third 007)

5. FAQ

Q: Is the serial number added to the start or the end of each line?

A: It is appended to the end of every line.

Q: What happens if I set the fixed width to 0?

A: No padding is applied and numbers are written as-is (1, 2, 3…).

Q: Does it automatically expand the width when the number grows beyond it?

A: Yes. When a number exceeds the set width, it is shown at its real width. For example, with width 3, number 1000 is shown as 1000.
